    BORN OF THE LEGEND

It was a Sunny day in month of march the day was 14th a holiday entire nation was playing holi and  in Holy family Hospital Bandra  area in  Bombay now Mumbai along with many children, a child was born in family of Tahir Hussain father of a newly born child and Mother Zeenat . This child born was no other than Aamir Mohammed Hussain Khan. No one knew that time this Child with Big ear will become one of the best actor and legend of Indian cinema

Aamir is a second child in his family, before him he has a sister name nikhat and after him he has one brother name faisal and he has younger sister . He was brought up in Local area of bandra one of the posh locality in Bombay along with his sibling. He also had His uncle nasir hussain who was a famous producer and director of his time with lot of  hit movie like yadoon ke barat, hum kisse se  kam nahin, zameena ko dekhna, caravan and many more, which in near future also launched Aamir for his first film Qayamat se Qayamat tak. His father also was a producer of various hindi movie like Anamika.

When Aamir was In KG he used to go to girls school Avabhai petit which was next to his Home. But during his school day he went to St Anne School in Bandra till 7th. As he was interested in Sports he shifted himself to Bombay Scottish school which is one of the best and posh School of Mumbai , where most of the rich people children used to study. Though Aamir family had a car, but he used to leave a middle class life. He used to go by bus and also used to travel by train. Where most of the other student used to come in there car.  Shifting to Bombay Scottish was  because none of the other school had a extra circular activities like cricket or tennis. As Aamir was very much interested specially in tennis. He used to play at national level. If he would have not being a Actor definitely he would have being a good tennis player. Anyway but it was very hard for him to manage both sports and studies as Bombay Scottish didn’t had a normal studies it had ICSE studies which was harder than SSC. But even after difficult Aamir managed to pass his ICSE with first class.. And after that even manage to play for national in tennis. He was brilliant chess player also.

During his School day he did a documentary for his friend Aditya in which he only had to give a expression there was no dialogue in it. When shabana azmi saw that documentary she told that this child have a very expressive face. Though during his childhood day aamir never used to like acting or shooting. As a child he was a very shy and also was very emotional about his sibling, which he is still, but just that he doesn’t show it. If somebody used to hit faisal his brother he used to take that person to task..There was a incident of him in his school where there was a race during his annual sports day. Aamir at that time was in junior school. When the race was on  some of  his Mothers friend was cheering for him, telling him come on  Aamir, hearing them instead of finishing the race he went to those people and in there lap. Wasn;t that cute. Every child have some innocence in them and Aamir was not much too different than all of us.  Aamir as a youg was  a charmer and used to get his work done with his charm. He was also intelligent in his study whenever his sister had any problem they used to come to him for help, but at cost as he used to make them do all of his work like get me a cup of tea or water, he was a prankster right from his young age. No one right from his sibling to his friend and even his co actor must have being spare with his prank.

Aamir hd worked as a chid artist in his uncle movie. He had worked in a movie Madhosh and  yadon ke barat. He was one  of the three child in the song yadoon ke barat. In the song Aamir had to go to bedroom during the scenehe put his hands up and give a gesture to his mother in the movie. After that in his school everybody used to tease him and used to make fun of him. He never used to like shooting in his childhood as they have to wear makeup and he used to hate it. He used to fight with his Co-child. He was suppose to another small cameo in the movie of is uncle of small shashi Kapoor but he refused it as he never used to like going for shooting. So finally his brother faisal did it.

Aamir did his junior college from Narsee Monjee College in vile parle Mumbai. After his 12th he stopped his studies as he was interested in film making It’s not that he stopped his studies as he wanted to have fun but he wanted to do something in direction line and he wanted to start right away without wasting his time. In India We have Junior School, Senior School, Junior College and Senior College before Junior School there is kinder garden. Junior school is from !st to 4th , Senior school is from 5th to 10th there is two level of examination one is secondary school examination also called as S.S.C. and Indian Certificate of Secondary education. I.C.S.E students are considered more intellectual than S.S.C student, discrimination over here also. Junior College is from 11 to 12ths and senior college is from 13th to 15th . Junior College also have various faculty like Arts/Commerce/Science. After 12th student have option to take any line like Accoutant, company secretary, Hospitality industry, entertainment line and many more line. Aamir opted for film line and started his journey in this line.

As  a start Aamir requested his uncle to allow him to work in his production company as a assistant director. When Aamir had decided and told his family about his decision to join his Uncle production company and his desire to become a director, His family didn’t support him as they never thought Aamir to be such a outgoing person as he was very reserve, shy and to himself, His parents always thought of their younger brother faisal to become a actor as he was very outgoing. But once Aamir decided to become a part of film making he went with his instinct. He started working as a assistant director in his uncle production company. He did Assistant direction for Manzil Manzil starring sunny deol and dimple kapadia also for movie zabardast starring sunny deol, jaya pradha. When he used to work as a assistant director he used to see star and there behaviour and he decided that once if he becomes famous as he used to think about direction he will not behave this way. One of the reason Aamir is still down to earth as he has gone through being infamous and he exactly know how people who are working behind the camera are treated and he decided that he will never do what he saw other actor are doing.

Aamir had worked in movie called Holi in year 1985 when he finished doing assistant direction for his uncle movie as he wanted to know more about film making and direction. In that movie ashutosh gowraiker was main lead and aamir was one of the student who were senior and rags a fellow student who commits suicide. In that movie Aamir was almost bald, most of the people thought it is because of the character, but fact was Aamir was dished by his one  year girl friend after that he got heart broken and he shaved his hair completely. Aamir was dished by most of the girl whom he had proposed during his youth. Reena who become Aamir first wife  used to stay in opposite building whom aamir used to see everyday and used to sing  mera samne wala kirke mein ek chand se tukar rehta hai, it was famous song  of padosan. When he proposed reena she didn’t told him immiediately Yes, it took her one month to say yes. In between aamir was in lot of stress what if she say no, what will happen, but when she told yes he was  very happy. They did a court marriage on 18apr 1986  on the day when javed miandad had hit a sixer to win a match against Pakistan on last ball, he had taken his brother faisal along with him  for witness and some of his friend, from reena side there were some friend of her. So when Aamir was 21 he got married to his first wife reena dutta, after marriage they leaved separately for one and half year as they never told there parents regarding that as both were scared as how will they react. Till that time both concentrated on their work as reena concentrated on her studies and aamir concentrated in his fim making. They both officially told there parents before aamir started working as a actor in his first movie qayamat se qayamat tak.. In that movie reena dutta  has done a cameo in the song Papa kehte hai.

Aamir started his career as a actor accidentally, though he wanted to become a director but deep inside he felt of being a actor also. His uncle nasir hussain was planning to make a movie. His son mansoor khan had written a screenplay and showed it to his father, his father liked it very much and told him to make a film and direct the same. He further decided to produce the film as financier would have never financed movie for a new people as during that time only big star and big name were working and there was no scope for newcomer, being a Nasir Husain production financer would finance the movie and it did happen. Mansoor Khan was very sceptical of doing the movie as this was a simple movie with a newcomers never tried in industry before and most of the movies of  nasir husain had a lavish set , lavish costume a high budget, He used to think will he be able to delivery the good. After various thought he finally decided to go ahead with the movie. Since it was a project by a newcomer all the cast and crew were new comer in the movie. Aamir was  doing assistant direction for this movie and they were looking for some new faces for the characters to be portrait in the movies. They went to various audition for main lead in the movie, but they didn’t found any one suitable for the character. At that moment Aamir would think inside why his uncle is not asking him to give audition for the same role, But he never told his uncle about this. Aamir was very close to his uncle more than his father. Whenever he used to go out for a date he used to take his uncle car.  After searching and going through so many audition for the main character neither Mansoor Khan nor Nasir Husain got the main lead which they were looking for. After someday His uncle told Aamir since we are not able to find any suitable actor for the role, why don’t you give the audition for the same, after hearing this aamir thought his uncle is joking, but he was serious, after hearing somewhere deep inside aamir felt good as atlast his uncle recognized him, but whether he will pass the audition he was not sure as after all he never decided to be  a actor ane he has not done any acting class, So Aamir did the Auditon for the movie and Mansoor Khan got the main lead actor who will portrait Raj character in the movie, At first they decided to give moustache to Raj character but before the first shot they decided to go without moustache, which was a right decision. Now the main actor was finalized they have to search were new actress, there was lot of audition of heroine and finally Juhi chawla was decided as a main actress. Amazing thing his Aamir took the audition of Juhi and she was not told that he is playing the main lead.. Aamir approved her as a main lead and this is how the main lead for qayamat se qayamat tak was finalized. After cast was finalized Music Director, playback singer and entire production team was finalized and shooting of Qayamat se Qayamat tak. There was two ending one was a sad and other one was happy. All the youngster of the crew wanted the happy ending and oldy wanted the happy ending, final decision was left with mansoor khan the director of the movie, Since it was his first movie and pressure from the distributor as it was totally new set up and all newcomer any wrong decision will effect the movie completely and will end the career of all consist person. But Mansoor went with his instinct and result was there to be seeing. Aamir was married during shooting of the movie, but he was told not to talk about it as it will effect the movie, but once the movie was released he disclosed it and broke heart of many female. When the movie was released in his first week it attracted very less people as most of the people did not wanted to see any newcomer movie, but  whoever saw the movie liked it and through word of mouth it started growing collection started to increase in second week, Aamir had told his distributor and theatre owner to atleast keep the movie for four weeks and if it doesn’t grow they can by all mean remove the movie from theatre all over. But craze of the movie grew and by fourth week it become a super hit and Aamir Khan become the star , so did Juhi chawla. After release of this movie still Aamir used to travel by  Auto. Once a fan of his saw him and give him a lift till his home. After that he decided to take his own car. Previous to that he used to drive his uncle car. Once he was going in his uncle car after release of Qayamat se qayamat tak suddenly he saw people from adjoining car seeing him and talking to each other and that moment he thought maybe something is wrong on his side after sometime he released Oh my movie have released and they have recognized me. This was for the first time he released  that he has become a star a public figure. So with qayamat se qayamat tak his film career started, though he always wanted to become a director, but Aamir started enjoying challenge of acting. Along with this film his relationship with his wife also grew as most of the people after the release came to know about there marriage and Aamir shifted to his uncle flat what was given to him as a appreciation of his work in qayamat se qayamat tak, which was in same building as his parents. With this a full long acting career of Aamir started, bringing  fame, joy, and respect of thousand and million of people not only in India but all over the world.

As time grew Aamir got involved with many project which later on he released was a mistake. In this project there was only two or three project which he was proud to be associated, which made him to think again about his career which he did after 1992. Since he had already committed he had to finish is project. He did it without much expectation.

By year 1992 Aamir finished his all so called average movie as per his standard. In the hear 1992 he decided to do only one film a year as he still had previous commitment which he ahs to finish till that time he didn’t took any further project . After qayamat se qayamat Aamir had signed so many not so good movie and after QSQT which was released in year 1988  none of Aamir movie were working at the box office he had a hit in year 1989 with tum mere ho, but it was not a superhit, in sapn of  2years from 1988 and 1990 there was many not so good movie of Aamir Khan like Jiwani zindabad, aawal number, Rakh(it was critical acclaim and one of the best movie but not a hit as star power in India depends upon hit movie given by a actor not about performance), afsana pyar ke, love love love, deewane mujhe se nahin. With all this movie except Tum mere ho not working industry people were calling Aamir a One film wonder and everybody were comparing him to Kumar gaurav who was the son of late Rajendra kumar and you had given only one film hit in the name of Love story, after that none of his movie worked and he was soon forgotten, Every industry people were saying samething about Aamir that he is a one film wonder and soon his career will get over. But Aamir had different idea not only he came back with a bang but he started to rule again in hearts of many people. Aamir came with a bang in year 1990 along with Madhuri dixit in the movie Dil. Which was one of the most entertaining movie of that year and which broke all the records that year, If that movie would have released during this multiplexes days would have being a biggest hit of all time. Not only Aamir Khan status as a star increased But Aamir Khan was now taking seriously as a actor. Though he lost out best actor award to sunny deol who got it for Ghayal.

After Dil  Aamir khan career got a new breathe of life. But when Indra Kumar had come with story line of the movie to Aamir , he didn’t wanted to do the film as he taught that movie doesn’t  make any sense, but when his secretary read the story he liked it and insistedhim to do the movie and as  Indra kumar was very eager to take Aamir in that movie as he was confident that he can carry the character of Raj very well, he somehow convinced him and finally he decided to do the film  and it was a good decision as without this movie his career would have not taken off again. With Dil becoming a hit confident of Aamir increased as before this he was doubting about his ability as an actor. Now that  Dil Movie was a hit Aamir started planning his career ahead as he wanted to finish all his previous movie which he head signed and with whom Aamir had no hopes. So after Dil there were movie like Deewana mujhe se nahin, Iski naam Zindagi, daulat ki jung in which only deewana mujhe se nahin was a average movie. Aamir was very disappointed with his choice of movie and with all this mistake he decided to first read the script of the movie and than only say yes to the project. Reading of the script is secondary in Indian film Industry as most of the actor working don’t even know the script of the movie. Aamir started demanding bound script and if producer were not able to give it he used to frankly say no to the project. As he decided to draw a line somewhere to work in a quality movie than to work in a big banner nonsense movie. At that moment he was working with yash chopra in the movie Parampara which he regretted later to be a part of it.  He had also got the offer of the movie Darr , but he didn’t did as Yash chopra refused to give joint narration of story to both Him and sunny deol as Aamir didn’t wanted later after the movie release any rift between him and sunny deol regarding length of the role or he has more space than me. Which happened after the movie released and sunny deol sweared not to work with yash chopra after that, as he had keep him in a dark regarding his scene and his character.  So with Darr out of the way and most of the not so good movie of Aamir coming to end, He came to position in his career where he could do only one movie at  time.

In year 1991 his third biggest hit was released movie name was Dil Hai ka manta nahin. It was a huge Success, Turning point and stubborn decision to do very less amount of film came after release of this movie. At this moment his frustration level of previous film have got into him as he stopped signing any movie after Dil Hai kai manta nahin was released. As it was easy again to fall into trap of signing meaningless cinema and again come into that situation which he was trying to avoid. Since his back lock work was still not over he decided not to sign anymore movie and once he finish all his previous project after that only he sign any new project, So with this decision till 3 years he signed few films. So day by day Aamir back lock was getting over and he was coming into a situation where he wanted to be and from where he can do only one film in a year. After 1991 every year Aamir was given one hit. With his career blooming rumour of  his affair also started growing, it was told that Aamir is having affair with Pooja bhatt and he is going to leave his wife for her,  both of them denied as Aamir and his wife reena dutta were happily married and all this rumour didn’t shake there marriage as there was no truth in it. Fact is he is such a charmer and such a good co-star that it is easy for actress to fall for him. Being in this industry one night fling is a part and parcel of many married actor life. But fact is Aamir and Pooja were a very good friend at that time who normally used to fight a lot. Since than Aamir relationship with his wife grew further. But there was no stop of  rumours and linking of Aamir with pooja bhatt. He used to clarify there is nothing. Also pooja bhatt used to, but there was no stopping it continued and from that moment onwards Aamir decided not to speak to gossip maganize as it was no use as they will continue writing nonsense, even if it is not right. There was a moment in his career where a gossip maganize told him that if he will not give a interview, they will write all wrong and bad about him. When he told he will not fall for there prey the maganize people started writing untrue about hjim linking him to most of the woman in the industry, till now you must have got it which maganize I am talking about. They started portraying aamir in bad light and writing all nonsense about him, sometime they used to write Aamir having affair with pooja bhatt, someday with madhuri dixit, someday with juhi chawla, sometime that he is interfering with director work, there was not a single issue where they didn’t write nonsense about him. It all started only when Aamir refused to give interview to a particular maganize.

After 1992 there was change in the way Aamir worked. He had decided once and for all that whatever happens he will finish all this old project and will do only one film at a time. Which means he will start the film and end the film at one go which actually happened only in year 2000 when he started his first home production Lagaan. It took Aamir nearly 8 years to work the way he wanted to work. Though when he had first decided to do that  he was criticized and was also backmouthed saying that he will not survive even a single year. But after this decision we saw only up in his career with most of his movie becoming a super hit like Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander (1992), Hum hai rahi pyar kai(1993),Andaz Apna Apna (1994), Rangeela and Akele hum Akele tum(1995),Raja Hindustani (1996), Ishq(1997),Ghulam(1998),  Sarfarosh, Mann and 1947-Earth(1999). All this movie a memorable one  and all a super hit movie only one movie which was release on eve of millennium was a disaster should I tell you the name yeah it was a Mela released in year 2000. Aamir has seeing that movie along with his Lagaan crew in Bhuj where he was starting his film shooting. Most of the crew member didn’t like it.But personally I liked the movie as I had neither seeing Caravan or Sholay. There was a rason for Aamir to do Mela which on other ground he would have never done it.

Aamir wanted to relaunch his brother  faisal and had requested his Raja Hindustani director Dharmesh Darshan to come and see faisal perfoming in Play and find a sutiable role for him and he will blindly do the film. After seeing Faisal play Dharmesh darshan decided to do Mela keeping Faisal personality in mind which Aamir agreed without any question as he totally believed in dharmesh darshan ability as he had followed his instruction and did what he told him for Raja Hindustani Character. Though in near future Aamir realized it was a biggest mistake of his film career.

After doing so much for his brother, Anyway better not to go into it.

However Aamir persistent of doing one film a year paid off  as after 2000 he had given most memorable movie like Lagaan (2001), Dil Chahta (2001), Mangal Pandey(2005),  Rang de Basanti(2006), Fanaa(2006) and Taara Zameen par (2007).

Though Aamir film career was growing from the year 2002- 2005 he had gone through trauma in his personal life.He Divorced his long term wife Reena datta in year 2003 and got married Assitant Driector of Lagaan Kiran rao in year 2006. which came as a shock to most of the people and to his fan as he was consider as perfect husband, But this proof that no one is perfect.Ups and lows happens in person life all you have to bear and grin it which exactly Aamir did. Though even now Reena Datta and Aamir share a very good relationship and Aamir is a very good father, a son and also a very good husband. Break ups happens but that doesn’t make people a bad person it is just that sometime spark between two individual die off and make it difficult for two people to leave together it is better to part ways than to leave miserable for rest of there life. It was difficult for Aamir after all he was famous and criticizing famous people is way of life of common people without realizing how they must be going to it.

As year went Aamir grew as more mature filmmaker, a better person, a better actor. Every year giving more meaningful film. He is trendsetter in all way.He was first actor to start a best debut award  when his first film become a huge success at a time when there were no takers for newcomer as Amitabh, Anil kapoor and all old actors were ruling the industry, he came at that time when industry required a fresh face bringing with that hope for other aspiring actors. With Aamir starting a trend soon followed other actor like Salman Khan, Vivek Mushran, Shahukh Khan.

He was even trend setter for number of film actor must do.As when Aamir had decided most of the actor was doing 30 to 40 movies and doing 3 to 4 shifts.,Now most of the actor doing 1or maximum 2 movies in year. When Aamir sang in Ghulam other actor followed the same. When Aamir directed Soon other actor is following the same.  A true trendsetter. Now that he has started Blogging most of the actor have started writing blog. And those who are not will start writing blog in near future.

Aamir have always giving importance to his fan. As he knows because of them his existence is there, if people will not see his movie he will not be what he is today. Does inspiring him to do more meaningful work.

Aamir rules and he is a true legend.

Aamir Khan - A Lucky Genius

We are ruled by numbers from the day we are born and the way we think is the way we write. Aamir Khan was born on 14/3/1965 numerologically comes to number 14=1+4=5 which is ruled by planet Mercury. Except number four and six Aamir will get along with all the numbers" says Mancchanda. "We sign the way we want to be seen by the world. Our signature reflects our personality and if the angle of signature is bad then there are numerous problems in life. But Aamir's signature is very progressive.
Aamir's handwriting reveals that he is a genius and I call him a lucky genius because most of his films come to very strong numbers and many vibrate with him. He started his career with Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak which comes to number 41. 41 is a very powerful number and is 41=4+1=5. People loved Aamir more than the movie. First Aamir was praised and then the movie. This is what luck is all about. His next big hit was Dil which comes to 8, and 5 and 8 get along very well.
Further hits like Dil Hai Ke Maanta Nahin and Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke comes to number 55 which is again an extra ordinary number. 5+5=10=1+0=1. 1 and five vibrate like house on fire. Aamir's secretary Aashish who is working with him past 13 years is born on 19th October(19=1+9=10=1+0=1). His next movie Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander was not a hit but was critically acclaimed because it came to number 66=6+6=12=1+2=3. For Aamir 3 will always give critical acclaim. This is the reason Andaz Apna Apna (30=3+0=3) also got him critical acclaim where as the movie did not work anywhere except Bombay. His next huge hit was Rangeela =25=2+5=7. 5 and 7 get along very well and Rangeela created a new kind of craze for Aamir. His biggest hit till today is Raja Hindustani which came to number 53=5+3=8 which again vibrates with him. Ishq=10=1+0=1 again was a big hit and proved lucky for him. The next big hit was Sarfarosh=32=3+2=5. A very powerful number and again Aamir's number. People loved Aamir's performance and then praised the movie.
In 2001 Lagaan was released. The movie had to reach Oscars because Lagaan =14 and Aamir is born on 14th. The movie was made with his number and being the actor and producer the biggest benefit had to go to Aamir. The movie's director Ashutosh Gowariker did not get that amount of credit what Aamir got. Some people also wrote that the movie was ghostly directed by Aamir. This is all because Lagaan comes to number 14. He has been so lucky that two days before the earthquake at Bhuj, Aamir had returned with his unit and the village where they had shot was only mud. It's the number 14 which saved the entire unit. His next movie Dil Chahta Hai=34=3+4=7 . Like Rangeela, Dil Chahta Hai is also 7 and people again went crazy on Aamir.
This is why I call him lucky. None of his films have been titled numerologically but Aamir has been lucky as most of his films had very powerful numbers and vibrated with him. Aamir Khan Production comes to number 72=7+2=9 which is a very strong number. What more luck can we talk about.
Aamir's handwriting and signature: Among all the stars (Amitabh, Srk & Hr) Aamir is the most egoistic & has a high self esteem. He ought to have the ego as his writing reveals that he is a genius in his field. I repeat that he is a genius in his field. Extremely critical. He is a self reliant person & his life for him is more important than his family. Money is very important for him. You will always hear him being paid the highest price for movies and advertisements. Extremely secretive & till the time he does not reveal no one will come to know his secrets. Extremely protective about himself. Will always think before he talks. You will never hear loose talk from him.
A sharp person & likes to do things in detail. Very emotional & all his decisions will always be emotional. He is not practical & logical. He is intuitive & will always take decisions what his heart tells him. This is the reason he always signs films with new or not so successful directors.
Aamir is very particular about his money and no one can touch his money till he does not decide to shell it out. Regular work is boring for him. He believes in new ideas. He is not jealous with any of his co-stars success. He takes his co-stars as healthy competition. He has determination & also has the energy to get it done. He believes in growth and has a very positive attitude towards life. He is very energetic.
Aamir knows how to use people. He is self centered not selfish. He likes flattery and hates blunt people. He is also a gutsy person.
Aamir should always believe in him & never work in awe of any big names. He should always work on new subjects. If he does regular films he will have failures. Presently his name comes to number 22 and he needs to add an alphabet in his full name to make it 23= 2+3=5. If he does it then he will reach much greater heights than what he has achieved till today.
His next film Mangal Pandey comes to number 41=4+1=5 . But by adding The Rising the number has changed. It vibrates with him. People will love Aamir more than the film. Aamir's performance will be applauded by critics and the audience but the film will not be upto expectations.

Aamir in search of a naughty boy!
Aamir Khan has been a busy man lately. Apart from two of his movies, Rang De Basanti and Fanaa, hitting theatres this year, he is also venturing into production. Although his new film is still untitled, it is based on the relationship between a father and his dyslexic son. It is to be directed by painter-turned-director, Amole Gupte. Aamir Khan wants to make sure that his casting is just perfect.

His production house has even put up a poster at a bookstore in Bandra which states, “Wanted Actor! A very naughty boy!” It goes on to say that if the boy is a bundle of mischief, he should drop his photos at Khan’s office. Let’s hope that Aamir’s search for a naughty boy yields some positive results.

Aamir Khan’s other recently announced projects

Aamir Khan to launch his official website
Aamir Khan who generally keeps himself at safe distance from the media seems to have worked out a way to reach his fans. To connect one on one with his fans, Aamir is in the process of launching his official website www.aamirkhan.com. The site however, is still under construction and on logging on to the page; there is a letter from the star that says ‘Right now I am in the process of putting my official page together. Leave your email address and I shall let you know when it is up.’ There is space provided on the page to submit your email address and also write in few comments if you wish to.

Looks like after the current Fanaa-Gujarat episode, the actor has realized the need to have a direct dialogue with his fans

Aamir takes up the cause of Narmada, Bhopal
Aamir Khan has taken up the cause of the Narmada Bachao Andolan and the Bhopal Gas tragedy victims. The actor is currently in Delhi for the issues. He spoke to victims from both the camps and heard them out. Thereafter there was a discussion which was open to questions from students and journalists. The director of Rang De Basanti, Rakyesh Mehra and actors Atul Kulkarni and Kunal Kapoor were also present. They spoke to the activists and heard their grievances.

The activist of the Narmada Bachao Andolan have been on a hunger strike since March 29. The survivors of the Bhopal Gas Tragedy have also been on a hunger strike since 4 days now. Aamir was followed by the media at the discussion. The activists of both the causes are glad because Aamir’s presence has brought attention to their plight.

Aamir Khan spends time with riot-affected kids
Aamir Khan was in Delhi recently to spend some time with eight children affected by the Gujarat riots. These children are now studying in the capital, post the traumatic experience of the riots. The meeting was set up by Act Now for Harmony and Democracy (ANHAD), an organization with which the actor is actively involved. He has been giving monetary support to many children who lost a year of education as a result of the riots.

In the beginning the kids were feeling very shy to speak up. However, Aamir did give them some valuable advice. He told them that such bad incidents in life make people stronger. These kids too should excel in their studies and put up a fight against their circumstances.

After the meeting, he spoke to the media about issues that concern the nation. He said that a lot of natural calamities and riots have happened in our country. However, it is up to the citizens to take a stand and do something. He said that he supported these kids irrespective of their religion, caste and status. Ultimately, we all are Indians and have to help each other.

Aamir teams up with Mani Ratnam
Aamir Khan has never had it so good! The reticent actor, who lets his work speak for himself, has just delivered a super-success in RANG DE BASANTI. Agreed, Aamir has been a part of many a successful film in the past, but RANG DE BASANTI is his biggest grosser to date. Obviously, he has reasons to feel euphoric.

“Yes, I am thrilled with the success,” a cheerful Aamir tells me. The supremely talented actor had gone off press after MANGAL PANDEY and now that RANG DE BASANTI has hit the bull’s eye, his belief in letting the work speak for itself has only strengthened. “My reasons for staying away [from the media] were strictly professional. The media is supposed to be the watchdog, guiding and enlightening the nation all the while, but look at what it has stooped to these days? Sensationalism has taken over completely,” he sounds concerned.

Back to RANG DE BASANTI. It’s indeed surprising that the actor hasn’t teamed up with Rakyesh Omprakash Mehra again. Generally, in Bollywood, a successful film only cements the relationship between two professionals. “He [Mehra] feels the script of his new film doesn’t suit me. In fact, he was toying with the idea of making this script during RANG DE BASANTI itself and it was understood that I wouldn’t be a part of it,” the soft-spoken actor divulges.

Not that there are dearth of offers for Aamir. Now that FANAH is complete [“I haven’t seen the film,” says Aamir], he’s ready to start work on two films. And, coincidentally, both the projects will be directed by South-based directors.

The announcement that’s bound to create ripples is that of Mani Ratnam and Aamir teaming up for a film. Yes, Mani has signed Aamir for his forthcoming project that’s expected to roll in October this year. “We were keen to work with one another for a long time. In fact, he had approached me earlier too, but things didn’t work out. However, it’s happening finally,” he smiles.

Unlike Mani’s last few films, this will be a one-language film, to be made in Hindi only. “I can’t speak Tamil,” Aamir states, “Right now, Mani hasn’t finalized anyone else. Not even the leading lady. All I know is that I have allotted dates from October onwards.”

The second project Aamir has given his confirmation to is the remake of the Tamil hit GHAJINI. “It’s the first time I am acting in a Tamil remake and I am pretty excited about it. It’s not one of those typical masala films imported in Bollywood. There’s solid substance in this one,” Aamir enthuses. The director of the Tamil film, Murugadoss, will direct the Hindi version as well, the actor adds.

Aamir’s encounter with Chess
That Aamir Khan excels in everything that he does is an established fact. This fact was proved once again on Sunday, when the actor displayed his knowledge of chess at the Khar Gymkhana.

He played a game of chess against grandmaster Abhijit Kunte. And he put up a tough fight against the champion! Kunte was playing with 20 people at the same time. Aamir started off with an Italian opening, also known as Guicco Piano or a Kolisch attack. However, the grandmaster knew how to tackle the moves. Kunte believed that they had an equal position in the game, when the queens were exchanged. Eventually, the duo mutually agreed on a draw after 19 moves.

Chess is one of Aamir Khan’s favorite games. It might be recalled that a couple of years ago, Aamir Khan and chess champ, Vishwanathan Anand had met for a game for thirty minutes. These thirty minutes landed up extending to five hours! Anand happens to be one of Aamir’s favorite Chess players. Talking about Khan, Kunte stated that the actor was very knowledgeable about the game. His game and strategy surprised him. But for some reason, we’re not surprised!

Mera Rang De Career Aamir
Rang De Basanti is a big hit. For Aamir's fans it was rather obvious. If it's Aamir, it has to be different and most likely a big hit, what's new about that?

But then there is one aspect about Khan's movies which not many might've noticed. Though Aamir's career graph will show a consistent high with big hits, many of the directors and co-stars who worked with him didn't really have a very impressive career until they worked with him. It was only after they did films with Aamir that their careers shot up and they reached the peak of their careers in films. It may sound very illogical but the facts and figures prove it. Aamir's success is contagious and it grabs the people whom he works with. Working with Aamir is contagious. It affects you with a virus of success. But who won't want to be attacked by such a virus!!

Let's take a look at his films and the related facts that support the above claim. Aamir's first movie in a lead role was Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (1988). The movie marked directorial debut of Aamir's cousin Mansoor Khan. It was a big hit of the late 80's and it brought in a new trend of teenage romance. Mansoor Khan was seen as a very talented young director, after the movie's success. Besides, his co-star in movie Juhi Chawla who had debuted with a dismal Sultanat also went on to become a superstar. Aamir and Mansoor Khan repeated the magic with Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar (1992). The movie was based on life of college students revolving around the sport of bicycle racing. Though Mansoor's next film with Aamir, Akele Hum Akele Tum (1995) didn't do well at the box office, he managed to get back in form with Josh which was a semi hit.

After Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, Aamir did few films, which didn't make a mark. Then in 1990, he again acted in the film of a debutant director. The film was Dil and the director was Indra Kumar. Indra Kumar had earlier produced two movies - Mohabbat and Kasam but without much success. Dil was an instant hit and there was no looking back for Indra Kumar. The film also gave a boast to Madhuri Dixit's career who starred opposite Aamir in the film. He and Indra Kumar again got together for Ishq in 1997 and the duo clicked yet again.

Then came Rangeela in 1995, the movie which served as a launch pad for the film careers of many. The director Ram Gopal Varma had officially registered a hit with his very first Hindi movie Shiva, but the movie failed to give him any recognition specifically. It was only after Rangeela that Ram Gopal Varma became a well known name. The film also made Urmila Matondkar a superstar overnight and she went on reaching new heights from then.

Dharmesh Darshan did make a movie called Lootere back in 1993, but his career as a director took off only after Raja Hindustani (1996). The movie was the biggest hit of the year and the music of Raja Hindustani became a rage. The film still remains to be the biggest hit of Dharmesh Darshan. The film also shaped Karisma Kapoor's career. She got the actress title from the glam-doll tag only after this movie. There was no looking back for her after that.

No Bollywood fan could possibly forget a movie like Ghulam (1998). The then-five-movies-old director Vikram Bhatt made his presence felt only after Ghulam. Vikram proved what he is capable of with this film. The movie also the brought 'tapoori ishtyle' in fashion due to Aamir's excellent performance and who can forget the magic of aati kya khandala. This was Rani Mukherjee's second film and it helped her gain recognition as her debut movie didn't quite do well.

John Mathew Matthan was worshipped for his work on his very first film Sarfarosh(1999). The film was seemed realistic and very perfect at technicalities and minute details yet it never became boring like most in the similar genre. The film placed John on such a high position that it affected his next second release Shikhar (2005) due to higher expectations.

Ashutosh Gowarikar had actually begun his career as a director way back in 1993 with Pehla Nasha. He had done a film with Aamir too called Baazi in 1995 but the movie was an average hit. Ashutosh and Aamir then teamed up again and created history in 2001 with Lagaan. The movie is one of the biggest hits of Bollywood ever and who can forget the Oscar nomination of 2002.

Dil Chahta Hai (2001) brought a revolution in Bollywood. The movie came in like a rebel and changed things in Bollywood completely. The film did extremely well especially in urban areas and director Farhan Akhtar became as a famous as a superstar. The film was known for its style, unique storyline and brilliant execution. The film also brew up sagging careers of Saif Ali Khan, Priety Zinta and Akshaye Khanna, who were Aamir's co-stars in the film.

And now of course Rang De Basanti which is rocking worldover currently. Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra's first film Aks (2001) bombed big time, though it starred superstar Amitabh Bachchan. But now things have changed completely for Rakeysh with Rang De Basanti. Besides Aamir, the other actors in the movie have also given a brilliant performance. Now it is to be seen if working with Aamir helps their career as well

Aamir’s next film in Dec.
Just recently, Aamir Khan had his first release in almost four years, MANGAL PANDEY – THE RISING. Now await Aamir’s next release at the end of this year. Yes, Rakyesh Omprakash Mehra is almost through with the principal shooting of RANG DE BASANTI [only a 3-day shooting is pending] and is planning to release it in December this year.

“We are looking for a year-end release for RANG DE BASANTI,” Mehra informs me, adding in the same breath that he has decided to release the film in the Hindi version only. Where does that leave the English version of the film [PAINT ME YELLOW]? “Though we can make a Hinglish version of the film, I’d prefer releasing the Hindi version only,” he stat

Aamir pairs up with another firang female
Aamir Khan is gearing up for his next release, Rang De Basanti where he is paired with a firang actress. Contrary to popular beliefs, all of Aamir Khan’s romantic scenes will be with an English actress Alice Patten and not with Soha Ali Khan. (Soha’s co-star in the film is R.Madhavan). That makes Alice, Aamir’s second English leading lady after Rachel Shelley in Lagaan.

Alice, who is the daughter of an important civic officer in England, is considered quite an actress. For Aamir’s sake let’s hope that, Rang De Basanti, turns out to be as successful as Lagaan.

"My roles are my favourite looks" - Aaamir Khan
February 03rd, 2005 - 0945 hrs IST

Aamir walked in looking his swankiest best recently at the inaugural meet of Rang De Basanti. The characteristic excitement that he stirs created a lot of curiosity in our minds about this film also. Here we pin him down for a quick one on one.

Tell us something about Rang De Basanti?

Well, it's too early to speak about the film right now. All I can say is that Rang De Basanti is going on floors by the end of this month. I have got this new look for the film. I have chopped my hair and shaved. (Smiles)

Is it a period film?
Baal dekhke aap ko lag raha hai period film hogi (smiles). It's a very modern film; it's a story of today's youth and its very contemporary.

A bit of more detail please…
It's a modern film, it's about today's youth and the direction they are going in, it's based on what happens socially in our daily life.

What motivated you to sign this film?
Script. The script of the film is awesome.

Since you call it a modern film, is it on the lines of Dil Chahta Hai?
Well only in terms of characters who are modern, but the story here is more dramatic.

What do you think of Rakesh Mehra?
I think he is a very talented director. I believe that the script that he has written is a wonderful script and I feel that the film is going to turn out equally good. I've seen his work earlier, and I have liked Aks.

What is your take on foreign actors being cast in Hindi Cinema?
That depends on the story and script requirement, if they require a foreign actor then they are cast in a film

You are very selective about the films that you do. What do you look for in a film before doing it?
I look for stories that touch my heart and whichever does that, I do the film. I liked the story of Rang De Basanti; it's a story that moved me.

Any message the film gives?
The message that the film tries to convey is that we all are responsible for the way our society is and we all have to contribute in our own way. It's our duty as well as responsibility. At the same time the film does not preach.

You have changed so many looks in the past few years, any favourites?
I have forgotten what my favourite look is. I think now my roles are my favourite looks.

You are one of the rare actors who actually in every sense get into the skin of the character…
Yes, I like to look and live like the role I am doing, and since I do one film at a time I have the freedom and space to do so.

Aamir Khan - The versatile actor

By: vicky
january 12, 2005
You don't see him often. But, when you do, he always manages to create ripples…. not only at the box-office, but also in the minds of his diehard fans.

Aamir Khan is one such human being who has carved himself a niche in the big bad world of Bollywood using both his talent and brain. The man who was awarded Padma Bhushan for the year 2003 by the Government of India goes by the philosophy 'one at a time'. All his films have a gap of one, two or more years, unlike other actors.

This groovy actor, who prefer to lay down his own set of rules was born on March 14 1965 to Tahir (Director) and Zeena Hussain Khan. He has two sisters named Nikhat and Farhad while his brother Faizal Khan is a VJ and an actor.

Aamir was first introduced as a child artiste in the super hit Yaadon Ki Baaraat (1973), which was soon followed by Madhoshi (1974). Aamir for some time after that drifted from films and went on to become the state tennis champion for Maharashtra. This was the time he met Reena, who was then his neighbour. Apparently, Aamir proposed to her the day he turned 21, and she accepted. The fact that Reena hailed from a Hindu family while Aamir was a devout Islamic caused enough concern for the family who objected to their marriage. So, they eloped, got married and returned to their homes. The secret remained for five months until one fine day Reena had to disclose the news to her family. It was in the year 1986 that the duo got married in public and began living together.

Reena even appears in the song 'Papa Kehte Hain' in Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (1989) opposite Juhi Chawla. His first leading role, as the doomed Romeo shot him to instant fame. This was soon followed with Dil (1990), Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahin (1990), Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander (1992), and Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke (1993).

If you have seen Aamir in Andaz Apna Apna (1994), you would know what makes him such a great actor. This Rajkumar Santoshi film, starring Salman Khan, Raveena Tandon and Karisma Kapoor was one of the funniest films of the year. Aamir's delicious wickedness and 'I am so smart' sort of act would keep you in splits throughout the film. Film was  a hit.

Aamir, Preity Zinta in Dil Chahta Hai Whether it was playing the local city boy in Rangeela (1995), a taxi driver in Raja Hindustani (1996) or the flamboyant youngster in Dil Chahta Hai (2001), Aamir did all of that in style.

Then came Lagaan (2001) that surpassed all expectations. The film starring Aamir Khan, Gracy Singh and a host of other stars with the theme of cricket did exceedingly well. In fact, the film was even nominated for the Oscars. What's more, there was also a documentary made on the making of the film titled Chale Chalo: The Making Of An Epic. This is the first ever attempt to chronicle a Hindi film.

This Bollywood megastar, in his recent visit to Pakistan emphasised the need for building trust and friendship between the two countries. The actor was touring the country to raise funds for a cancer hospital built by former cricketer Imran Khan in Lahore. The bat that hit a six on the last ball of the match in the film Lagaan fetched Rs. 6 million at the auction, thanks to Aamir.

On the personal front, Aamir Khan has suffered public estrangements from his nearest family members. In December 2002, he and Reena (whom he was wedded to for sixteen long years) got divorced by mutual consent. Of course not much is known about the cause of break-up. Reena was given the custody of their two kids - Junaid and Aira. In July 2000, Aamir also became estranged in a very public way from his father. The rumour mill said the break came due to Aamir's disapproval of his father's involvement with Divya Palat, a much younger actress whose work Tahir intended to showcase with his production company. Others claimed Aamir was reacting to news that his father had been raising funds by trading on his son's name and reputation.

Aamir, Gracy Singh in Lagaan Some time back, every other newspaper and magazines carried article about his secret wedding with his newest girlfriend Kiran Rao, in a ceremony in London. Apparently, the actor first met Rao on the sets of Lagaan where she was an assistant director. However, Aamir has denied the rumour. Grapevine also has it that the actor had a torrid affair with Jessica Hines, an English writer who delivered their son, Jaan Harry Hines, on September 14 2003.

For those who are upset about not having seen their favourite hero for a long time, watch him in Ketan Mehta's 1857: The Rising based on the 1857 rebellion and Rakesh Mehra's Rang De Basanti that will cover the trials and tribulations of the city Delhi.

Aamir is one of the few actors who have acted in all genres of Indian films - comedy, action, drama and romance. Though he performs in few films, Aamir Khan is acknowledged today as the most complete Indian actor for his diverse choice of roles and films. Let us hope that this versatile actor will bring to us more reasons to be proud of. Way to go Aamir!

Interview: AAMIR KHAN
january 12, 2004

PASSION PLAY!
In this rare chat, Aamir Khan lays bare his heart to ‘g’. Revealing, beside the fact that he had lost his faith in the system of awards in India, he was also shocked, as a viewer to see Hrithik Roshan taking his oath in English, and not in Hindi, in Lakshya.
Excerpts from an interview.
To what extent is it true that you are a method actor to the core?
It is a misconception that I am a method actor. Frankly speaking, I do not know what method acting is. However, let me hasten to confess that I am not a trained actor, like say Naseeruddin Shah or Om Puri.  As an actor, I only go by instinct. I go by what the script tells me or how the director and I see the role as such. However, having worked with English actors in both Lagaan and The Rising, I find that the English actors are a lot more rehearsed with their lines, unlike Indian actors.
What gives you a high as an actor?
One, the excitement of being able to be part of a story and two, being able to manipulate the emotions of the audiences is what I would call my high as an actor. It drives me and sustains me as an actor. I am basically creative and thirsty as an actor, because though I did turn a producer with Lagaan, I am still involved with acting. No one makes a film for a bunch of committee members. You make a film for an audience. It is very difficult to be creatively objective.
As of now, which are your forthcoming projects on the floors?
The only film for which I have said ‘yes’ to, after Ketan Mehta’s The Rising is Rakesh Mehra’s Rang De Basanti, which is going to be made as a bilingual in Hindi as well as in Punjabi. Arjun Rampal has been cast along with me. It will go on the floors sometime in January next year. I like working in only one film at a time.
Tell me something more on Ketan Mehta’s The Rising?
On the personal level, The Rising is like a homecoming for me. I had earlier worked with Ketan in a small cameo in Holi. It is a colonial era period epic set against the 1857 Indian mutiny and the first war of Indian Independence, which fuses western and Indian filmmaking styles. After years of torment and abuse, the Indian population takes a stand against the Imperial British. Inspired by the true story of the Indian revolutionary leader, Mangal Pandey, the film is based on the friendship between an Indian soldier and a British commanding officer, William Gordon, played by Toby Stephens who had a negative role in the James Bond film Die Another Day. The Rising is a sweeping epic filmed on location in India. Costing $20m,the film will be the most expensive film ever produced in India, in both the Hindi as well as the English language versions.
What kind of preparation did you undertake to get into the skin of your character?
Ketan Mehta has been working on the film for the past five years. The project got bigger with each passing day. Not only did I not appear in any Hindi film for the past three years, but also got back into shape for my role. I worked out regularly in a bid to shed the extra kilos that I had put on since Dil Chahta Hai. I also read every major book on Mangal Pandey and spent time with the Indian army posted on the front, to prepare for the role.
What is your role in The Rising?
All that I can say as of now about my role in The Rising is that I play Mangal Pandey, who was hanged by the British in 1857 for leading a revolt against their rule. It’s a very challenging and intense role as far as I’m concerned. My co-stars are Toby Stephens, Amisha Patel and Rani Mukherjee.
Why did you turn down John Mathew Mathan’s offer to cast you in his new film?
John Mathew Mathan is a very good director and I enjoyed working with him in Sarfarosh. He wanted me to work with him once again in his new film but, I turned it down because I did not like the script. A script has got to be good for both of us. It has to be a creative process for both, the director and the actor.
Do you watch films of other actors?
Yes. Recently, when I watched Farhan Akhtar’s Lakshya, I was, to tell you the truth, shocked to see Hrithik Roshan taking his oath in English and not in Hindi, our National language, when he joins the armed forces.
How open are you as a producer to go through the scripts of writers?
I’m ready to go through the scripts of all writers, even those from even rank newcomers or writers who have been unsuccessful earlier in their attempts in marketing their creative output.
Are you aware that Akash Deep of Sahara has made a spoof on Lagaan?
I know that Sahara has made a spoof on Lagaan called Thakaan, with Akash Deep as the director and Johny Lever imitating me and the other actors of Lagaan. Although I on a personal level do not support spoofs, I believe that they have to be accepted and taken in a lighter vein.
Can you tell me something about your film Chale Chalo on the making of Lagaan?
We had made the film Chale Chalo directed by Satyajit Bhatkal on the making of Lagaan. Though the production of the film cost us heavily, we were particular about releasing it only after Lagaan was released though people did tell me that if we had released Chale Chalo before the release of Lagaan we would have derived a lot of mileage as far as publicity was concerned. People even told us that it was risky on our part to release Chale Chalo after Lagaan is released because if Lagaan flopped, there would be absolutely no takers for Chale Chalo. But I was
bent upon releasing Chale Chalo after the release of Lagaan to show the audiences the difficulties we faced
while making Lagaan and the entire creative process.
Which are your most favourite films?
Besides Lagaan and Dil Chahta Hai, ten other favourites of mine are Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, Dil, Dil Hai Ke Maanta Nahin, Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander, Andaz Apna Apna, Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke, Rangeela, Akele Hum Akele Tum, Raja Hindustani and of course, Sarfarosh.
How has your journey as an actor been, from Holi till The Rising?
It has been an enjoyable one! As an actor, I have seen improvement from film to film and developed a lot more control over my work. I even learnt to mouth my dialogues a bit slower. Earlier, I used to rattle them off at a greater speed.
The Oscars will once again be upon us. You’re known for your rigid stance against awards. However, you had no qualms about being involved in the Oscar Awards.
I’ve lost faith and trust in the system of awards in India. I have had personal bitter experiences of the same here. However, I did not object to my Lagaan co-stars receiving their awards down here. I felt it would have been unfair and maybe petty on my part, to expect them to adopt my stance. I did not want them to feel that I was imposing my personal views on them. They were being awarded for their performances and I did not want to steal that moment from them, although I was somewhat aware of how things worked out here. However, I had absolutely no experience of the Academy Awards aka the Oscars, and the system they followed in the awards process. I went to the USA without reservations, to see if I could win the coveted Oscar for Lagaan. It would have been not just an honour for me but moreso for my country. Another reason I decided to go to the Oscars is that I was keen on Lagaan getting a worldwide platform on a platter. I wanted to enlarge our audience base.
The Shwaas brigade is out there in the U.S. Could you give them a few tips on the selection process.
You have to be ready to hold trials of your film for a varied audience. We held only three trials of Lagaan on our own in the U.S. The fourth one was an official screening. One has to work there in ensuring that a maximum number of Academy members come for your screening. While only six members turned up for our first screening, 12 and 20 members turned up for the second and third screenings, respectively. We were warned that we would get only 40 members out of the 200 for the fourth screening because over the years India had been sending bad entries to the Oscars. We had thus lost our credibility. Thus, for the fourth screening, Ashutosh and I were not allowed to attend, but learnt that out of the 200 members, 198 had turned up.
What’s your motto in life?
We have just one life to live on earth. As such, we have no other alternative but to do what we believe in. We should believe in ourselves and follow our dreams fearlessly with perseverance, courage and conviction. Whatever difficulties we may have to face in the process of achieving what we set out to, we have to overcome them with the help of the very qualities I have mentioned above.
Finally, what’s your strength as an actor?
If you ask me what my strength as an actor is, all I can honestly say is that I try to be honest with the script and the character which I am asked to portray. My passion, perseverance, intensity, etc. which I drive into my work, have stood by me so far.

“I’m not married”
Unarguably one of the finest actors of his generation, Aamir Khan has now also earned a reputation for being one of the most controversial personalities of the times. After almost three years of reticence, the reclusive actor breaks his silence to Jitesh Pillai and discusses the turbulent and tantalising events in his life

It’s been three years after Lagaan. And The Rising will be released only in June next year, right?
That’s correct. Dil Chahta Hai was my last release in August 2001. While we have finished the principal shooting of The Rising , post-production will take us till June 2005.

Was this gap of four years planned?
No, it wasn’t. Things just turned out this way. After Dil Chahta Hai’s release, I was busy in promoting Lagaan all over the world right upto the Oscars. Then, I also went through some personal problems. So, I was not in the frame of mind to work.

Somehow, you never capitalised on the success of Lagaan...
Lagaan wasn’t my first success that I needed to capitalise on it. I don’t sign films in order to capitalise on my earlier work. I do a film when I’m excited about a project.

You’ve been doing a Greta Garbo on the media. You haven’t spoken to the Press in ages. I don’t buy the “actors must talk only to promote their films” spiel...
(Laughs) I agree that I’ve usually done interviews before a release, as it helps the film. But look, I’m speaking to you a good eight months before the release of The Rising !

But you’ve been inaccessible for so long...
(Laughs) Not inaccessible. I have been replying to every SMS of yours. No, seriously, I have just been very busy. And I like to keep gaps between my interviews, as I may not have anything new to say.

You have an MBA approach towards work – methodical and studied. Perhaps you need to be more like a bull in a China shop.
On the contrary, if I had been methodical and studied, then I would have seen to it that I had at least one release a year! I’m more instinctive and emotional about my films. Perhaps, I am the only actor who does not calculate his film moves and releases.

Are you stubborn to the point of being rigid?
No, I’m not.

Are you a control freak?
No.

Don’t you insist in your film contracts on creative control of the films you do?
No I don’t. Instead, I’m extremely careful about the directors I work with.

Did you see Farhan Akhtar’s next film after Dil Chahta Hai, Lakshya?
Yes.

Did you like it?
It didn’t work for me...

As a viewer or as an actor?
As a viewer.

TIMES NEWS NETWORK

What got you interested in The Rising?
What attracted me was the script. It is about the concept of freedom and the right of every individual to hold his head as high as the next man. Also, what amazes me is that the East India Company came as traders and ended up becoming rulers of India. Through the script I learnt a lot of new things, which were not taught to us in our history books. For example, the fact that one of the most important products that the East India Company dealt in was opium or the fact that the company ran its own brothels for its white soldiers. I found that fascinating.

So is The Rising historically accurate?
The history of that time was documented by the British, who were in power, and like any political party in power, they probably recorded what was convenient to them. As Indians we have a very oral tradition of passing down history – through stories, folk songs and our performing arts. What you’ll see in Mangal Pandey is a combination of what is recorded, what we have heard as Indians and a bit of Farrokh’s (Dhondy) imagination.

Have you deified Mangal Pandey in the film?
I think not. What Ketan (Mehta) and Farrokh have done is that they have used Mangal Pandey to represent the awakening conscience of the people of India. He represents the masses of that time that had begun to question and thereafter oppose the rule of the East India Company.

But is Mangal Pandey sexy enough? Why don’t you sing Pehla nasha and woo the heroine? One is, dare I say it, waiting to see you in more attractive roles.
(Laughs) I think Mangal Pandey is an attractive character.

Some members who claimed to be descendants of Mangal Pandey have protested against the film.
I haven’t heard about this. But, if I’m not mistaken, it will be a little difficult to ascertain if there are any authentic descendants of Mangal Pandey still surviving. I’m sure that there might be numerous people claiming to be his descendants.

But don’t you need the permission of the descendants to make a film on a historical character?
Not that I know of. And I don’t see why anybody should object because we are making a film about the first war of Independence. And we are showing Mangal Pandey as the first recorded revolutionary of India who sacrificed his life to plant the seed of freedom and Independence, which we achieved 90 years later.

Is The Rising anti-British?
No it’s not. I think that’s taking a very narrow view. The film is anti-colonisation. In TheRising , it’s just that the oppressor happens to be British. It could have been anyone. Look at America’s role when they invaded countries like Vietnam or Iraq. Like all societies, the British had good and bad aspects to their history.

Did you call up Aishwarya Rai and try to convince her to stay in the film when she walked out over a price issue?

Was there any bad blood between you and Ashutosh Gowariker when you couldn’t do Swades ?
Of course not.

Ok, now, give it me to me straight – are you married?
I don’t speak about my personal life. But let me clarify this aspect – NO, I’m not married.

So are you seeing Kiran Rao?
As I said earlier, I would not like to speak about my personal life.

Why?
Because I don’t think my personal life is anyone else’s business.

Is it true that you often dropped in to see Ashutosh on the sets of Swades to meet Kiran?
(Smiles) I was shooting in the same vicinity, so I dropped in to meet Ashu.

Okay, did you have an affair with a TV journalist?

You both were supposed to be more than just good friends.

Okay, now before you toss me out, I must ask you – it’s alleged that you have fathered a child who is now in London...

Aamir, the thing is that rumours gain credence when you choose to keep mum about them.
I’m happy with the way I’m leading my life and I don’t owe an explanation to anyone.

Aamir breaks his silence

June 02nd, 2004 - 1030 hrs IST

Aamir Khan, one amongst the talented names this side of the Atlantic, has been in the limelight all the while. Even if he never spoke to the press or issued outrageous statements to remain in the public eye, the columns continued to devote ample space to the actor. He continued to make news, on personal issues and professionally as well.

Aamir is sporting a new look these days. His shoulder-length hair and a thick moustache instantly bring to your mind the role he is portraying in THE RISING. When is he returning back to his 'normal' looks? "That's going to take time. Till I don't complete THE RISING," he informs me.

THE RISING is nearing completion stages, but Aamir hasn't seen a frame of it yet. "I'll watch it once it gets completed. A few days' work is still pending. But I hope to watch the first cut by August. Only when I feel that the work is complete will I cut my hair," he smiles.

It's been almost three years since an Aamir Khan starrer has released. "Yes, DIL CHAHTA HAI was released in August 2001, so it'll be more than three-and-a-half years by the time THE RISING makes it to the marquee [THE RISING is slated for release some time in January 2005]. It's been quite a gap," he ponders awhile.

Was it intentional? Didn't Aamir always propagate the concept of one film a year? "The gap between my last film and this one has been immense. It just happened... Yes, I always desire a gap between two of my films, but nothing exciting came my way after DIL CHAHTA HAI. And then suddenly THE RISING happened," he divulges.

There's Rakyesh Omprakash Mehra's RANG DE BASANTI as well. "That's another subject that excited me considerably. This film will roll once I am through with THE RISING," he states.

Ironically, both THE RISING and RANG DE BASANTI [PAINT IT YELLOW] are being made in Hindi and English versions simultaneously. Is it a definite strategy to look at Hollywood? "It's a sheer coincidence that the two films hold international appeal. But I am very clear about the films I associate with -- they should appeal to the Hindustani audience first and foremost. My target audience will always be the Indian market," he states firmly.

And what's the latest on the home-production front? Why hasn't Aamir Khan Productions announced any film after LAGAAN? "Perhaps, I am not cut out to be a film producer. I haven't received my monies from some distributors of LAGAAN. I am not tactful enough to deal with distributors... [pauses for a while] One of the reasons for not starting a home-production could also be attributed to the fact that I haven't come across a script that would really excite me," he admits.

WHO WAS MANGAL PANDEY  ALL ARE ASKING THIS QUESTION PREVIOUSLY I HAD WRITTEN ABOUT IT. AS I WAS NOT VERY MUCH SURE I KNOW MANGAL PANDEY WAS A PEASANT INAN BRITISH ARMY WHO REVOLTED AGAINST THEM BUT WHY HE REVOLTED HERE IT GOES MANGAL PANDEY WAS A PEASANT FROM BALLIA IN UTTAR PRADESH HE WAS A SOLDIER IN THE ARMY OF THE BRITISH EAST INDIA COMPANY. AT THE TIME OF THE FIRST WAR OF INDEPENDENCE, THE COMPANY INTRODUCED NEW RIFLES , WHICH USED ANIMAL FAT FOR GREASING THE CARTRIDGES, INFLUENCED BY THE EXAMPLE OF THE COMPATRIOTS IN BAHRAMPUR, MANGAL PANDEY REFUSED TO USE THE GREASED CARTRIDGES AND BROKE IN TO OPEN MUTINY ON MARCH 29, 1857 AT BARRACPORE NEAR CALCUUTA AND USED HIS COMRADES TO JOIN HIM. SURROUNDED BY GUARDS AND EUROPEAN OFFICERS, HE TRIED TO COMMIT SUICIDE BY SHOOTING HIMSELF AND WAS SERIOUSLY WOUNDED. HE WAS COURT COURT- MARTIALLED ON APRIL 6 AND HANGED AT ABRRACPORE ON APRIL 8, 1857. THIS WAS THE REVOLUTION AND WAS THE FIRST RISING ALONG WITH JHANSI KI RANI WHO DURING THAT TIME THOUGH SEPERATELY RAISED THE VOICE AGAINST EAST INDIA COMPANY WHO WERE RULING INDIA. MANGAL PANDEY AND JHANSI KI RANI WERE TWO INDIVIDUAL WHO RAISED A FIRE IN HEART OF MANY INDIAN TO REVOLT AGAINST BRITISHERS. I KNOW AAMIR WILL DEFINATELY GIVE ALL FOR HIS CHARACTER HE ALSO SPOTTED A MUSTACHE AND HAS GROWN HAIR HE HAS BECOME VEGETERIAN AS MANGAL PANDEY WAS BRAHMIN. I PRAY GOD THAT MANGAL PANDEY THE RISING SHOULD BECOME EVEN BIGGER HIT THAN LAGAAN. IT WILL BE A TRIBUTE TO A FREEDOM FIGHTER WHO MOS TOF THE INDIAN PEOPLE DID NOT KNEW AND THEY WILL COME TO KNOW THROUGH  AAMIR KHAN.

Aamir Khan's Guide to Staying Exclusive
Aamir Khan's public appearances are as rare as his movie releases. The actor guards his privacy just as ferociously as his good friend Ashutosh Gowarikar is guarding the leading lady of his new flick Swades. While well get to see Khan on screen only by the end of the year in Ketan Mehtas The Rising, the actor tells us how he remains an exclusive recluse.

I, ME, MYSELF
I DO the films that I want to do and attend the functions that I want to attend. Everything is on a personal level with me. I do things out of personal preferences. There is no scheme about my need to remain exclusive. I just go by what I feel like doing. Sure, I am both a thinking as well as a feeling kind of person, but I wont do anything that doesnt matter to me.
THE PATH NOT TAKEN
I DONT like to think Im an island. Its just that I am leading my life the way I want to. I understand that the path I am walking on is not the path most people will choose to take.

I HAVE ISSUES
CERTAIN issues are close to me and I have no qualms in going all out for them. My trip to Kargil, for instance, might not be really issue-based but it was because of my need to show appreciation for a group of people who lead such a hard life. I wanted to discover the tough life they live and wanted to explore the thinking of people who, in a way, are trained to kill. I applaud our soldiers sense of duty and responsibility and wanted to interact with them on a one-to-one level.

I AM MY CHOICES
I THINK everyone is about the choices they make. Of course, there are some choices we are happy with and some that we regret later. I dont need to go to a function and speak on the mike about anything. What I say is not that important, what I do is more important. My way of thinking will reflect in my deeds and that will be a real indicator of my personality.

I LOVE AAMIR FROM BOTTOM OF MY HEART
Rising shooting schedule

February 12th, 2004 - 1200 hrs IST

The shooting schedule of Aamir Khan's The Rising is in full swing. In one of the scenes recently shot at the Police Force grounds in Pune, the perfectionist Khan was seen fully charged before the camera to display his histrionics on the silver screen after his prolonged hibernation of more than 2 years from Bollywood.

In the scene being filmed, 1000 junior artists dressed in red and white uniforms as soldiers are asked to bite off the cartridges greased with pig and cow fat by the British imperials refusing which they will be blown off into bits by cannons. Undeterred by the orders, Mangal Pandey (played by Aamir Khan) comes forward and spews the word 'fire'. The scene is of prime importance in the movie as it leads to the turning point of the mutiny led by revolutionary Mangal Pandey against the British East India Company. Once the cut is called, Aamir encourages the junior artists to get the perfect nuances for the scene to express their wrath against the racial discrimination.

Well Aamir, we all are aware of your sincere dedication towards work, which makes us ardently look forward towards your film.
